Tom Murphy update (UB baseball draftee)
« on: June 10, 2015, 01:48:50 PM »
I was in a baseball googling mood today and wondered what happened with Tom Murphy.

For those that dont remember he was drafted 3rd round by the Rockies in 2012. He was a great power hitting catcher while at UB. Was fun to watch but even I had no idea he would get drafted so high.

After being injured last year it appears hes back on track as the Rockies #1 catching prospect. Hes back to hitting well again this year (although would be nice to get those K's down). Would be amazing to see him become the every day Rockies catcher some day. Hitting in that park should also be nice for his fantasy potential :)

Back and healthy: Tommy Murphy, C

The Rockies have traditionally struggled to develop Major League-caliber catchers, but they believe they've got one on the way in Murphy. The University of Buffalo product played in just 27 games last season before being shut down with a right rotator cuff strain, but he avoided surgery and was near 100 percent by season's end.

Colorado's No. 8 prospect, Murphy is a powerful 6-foot-1, 220 pounds and has bashed 33 homers in 182 professional games since he was a third-round pick in 2012.

"There's some rust, I think, because it's been a while since he played, so he's starting to knock the rust off," Wilson explained. "Tommy Murphy's the type of kid who's going to outwork everybody, and so it's not going to take him long to get back in the groove. Here's a guy who has a chance to impact both sides of the ball."

In addition to his offensive tools -- Murphy owns a .278/.360/.514 slash line through three seasons -- the backstop handles his position well with an above-average arm in both strength and accuracy and an advanced approach in receiving and blocking.

"Whenever you can find a catcher at a premium position that's able to do that," Wilson said, "can really catch and throw -- and he's got power that plays at the Major League level -- all those things combined are going to present an impact player for us at some point."

Murphy will be challenged with an assignment to Triple-A in 2015.

Good news for Tom Murphy - unless the replacement becomes the starter...

@RhettBollinger  - Eric Fryer will be pulled out of the Pan Am Games to join the Twins. He's added to the 40-man roster with Ricky Nolasco to 60-day D.

Kevin Oklobzija @kevinoDandC  - The #MNTwins have sent catcher Chris Herrmann to the #ROCRedWings and promoted Eric Fryer, adding him to the 40-man roster.

Kevin Oklobzija @kevinoDandC - Eric Fryer left #ROCRedWings Saturday to join Team USA for the Pan Am Games in Toronto.
He'll now head to Minneapolis to join the #MNTwins.

Tom Murphy and the United States Pan-American Baseball Team will be going for Gold this evening against Canada.
Game time is 7:05 pm ET and its supposed to be shown on ESPN2 as well as online via ESPN3.

TV Note - I'm not sure how much coverage will be on ESPN2 so you may want to keep ESPN3 open so you don't miss any of the game.
If ESPN2 is showing another sport and the baseball isn't available via ESPN3 and you get CBC - flip over to that channel - they could be showing the game there.

Its going to be Buffalo vs Buffalo when Tom Murphy is up to bat as current Buffalo Bison Jeff Francis will be the starting pitcher for Canada.

Go United States! Bring Home The Gold!

Tom Murphy broke his arm. He was likely the primary catcher for the Rockies this year. Now it'll be wait and see.

Looks like Murphy is getting closer to getting back to the Rockies.

There is a lot of hype on him this year too especially in fantasy baseball. There is a potential to be one of the better offensive catchers in the bigs this year if he can stay on the field especially playing at Coors.

After being called up to the Majors at the end of the past few seasons, Tom finally got a mid season call-up.

He has hit 4 of 8 in the past two games for the Rockies, against the Phillies.
