The polls don’t pass the smell test. Buffalo ranked ahead of Syracuse, St Bonaventure, Cincinnati, and South Dakota State. Everyone knows the Bulls should be ranked higher than Texas A&M too. 😅

Wow.

Is this our highest ever?

The only in-season “ranking” that matters to me is the seeding for the MAC tournament. Even a great RPI won’t get a MAC team an at-large invitation to the big dance.

Our SOS at #6 is a huge help but that won't last.

Indeed, it's great to see but I don't think anyone here is holding out hope for an at-large. Especially not after the '04-05 season with Battle and co...we know better. Man, thinking about that again...at least ESPN recognized us as a "snub" that year. Always thought that team could have made noise in the Big Dance, certainly didn't think it would take us another decade just to get there. The payoff was worth it though, and I expect better times to come.

Wow, UB has dominated since 2009. We had that bad 07 and 08 stretch that kill us, and pre-2004 stretch.

Now that we have seen the chart, you should update since 2009. UB should easily be the best team in the MAC over the last 9 years.

Incredible. UB should really be in a better conference.

I just did a similar thing with KenPom ratings going back to 2002 since that was the first date he has online. This includes this year to date.

Buffalo's Average KenPom Rating: 132.2 (4th in MAC; MAC average 166.1)
Buffalo's Average over last 5 years: 99.0 (1st in MAC; MAC average 169.5)
Buffalo's Average over last 10 years: 116.8 (2nd in MAC; MAC average 178.5, Akron was 1st with 116.0)
# of times Buffalo had top KenPom Rating: 4 (tied for 2nd with Akron, Kent State was 1st with 5)
# of times Buffalo had Bottom KenPom Rating: 1 (2003 - tied for 5th with Akron, 4 way tie in first with 0 - KSU, WMU, Ohio, BGSU)
# of times Buffalo had above MAC average KenPom: 13 (tied for 2nd with 3 other teams - WMU, Ohio, Akron, Kent State is 1st with 14)
With KenPom, Buffalo has had zero finishes in the top 50, 4 in the top 100, 1 worse than 200, 0 worse than 300

KenPom seems to rate KSU as the best time over this period - average of 110.8 (best in MAC), 1 time in top 50, 9 times in top 100, only once above 200 and zero above 300

Akron is second with an average of an average of 117.6, 1 time in top 50, 9 times in top 100, 2 times above 200 and zero above 300.

Northern Illinois rates as the worst program in the MAC according to KenPom over this span with zero top 100 finishes, 11 finishes of 200 or greater and 2 finishes of 300 or greater. They've been the bottom team 4 times and above average only twice.

Basically, KSU and Akron have been the class of the MAC with Ohio and Buffalo in the next tier, but in terms of recent history Buffalo is tops (KSU is largely propped up by seasons 2002-2011, their more recent history has been bringing them down)

A few other things:
Best average KenPom rating for entire conference: 110.5 (2005 - MAC had 8 teams in top 100)
Worst average KenPom rating for entire conference: 200.3 (2011 - MAC had only 1 team in top 100 - Kent State at 99)
Average KenPom rating for the MAC in 2018 right now is 189.1 which would rank this 14th out of the last 17 years in terms of MAC strength just ahead of 2013.
Worst KenPom for a league champion: 141 - by Kent State in 2017
Times in the last 16 seasons (not including 2018 since it hasn't completed) the top KenPom team also won the MAC championship: 8 - so KenPom is batting 50%
