Just have to stop their two players Darrian Ringo and Sibande.

They will play D and turn you over, but don't score at a high enough average clip

UB 84, Miami 72

UB clinches the #2 seed tonight win a win or Ball State loss.

Nah, some professional talent, but not at the NBA level. If McCrea and Watt didn’t make it, nobody on this roster is close.

You really love Mitchell Watt. CJ and Harris >>>>> Watt and McCrea. Hence why this team is better than those teams.

You know they both played the same position and peaked on different seasons. This response just doesn’t make sense or is uniformed.

Not sure who you're talking to here, but both Watt and McCrea peaked as seniors. Both won MAC POY as Seniors, if my memory serves me.

The point is that we have two guys who are peaking together. If McCrea and Watt peaked together as Seniors, Buffalo would've won a title before Hurley. In fact, Hurley probably doesn't ever come to UB.

But Watt was sick, and so his development was slow, and McCrea really didn't come into his own until his Junior year (after Watt left.) The point, I think, is that we have better players now than we ever did, and they are establishing themselves earlier in their careers because they are more talented.

McCrea was great, don't get me wrong. And Watt is one of my all time favorite players. But UB is attracting another level of athlete now. And just wait until Jeenathan Williams and Ronaldo Segu arrive!

I used the quote function, so whom I was addressing shouldn’t be too hard to figure out.

When Watt was a senior, McCrea was a soph, Titus Robinson was a senior. Watt and McCrea were maybe on the court together 20% of the time? So I was responding to the idea that one cannot say they were not better NBA prospects because they were an inferior team (they were), but they really weren’t on the same team. This team is better 2 thru end of the bench, not at 1, which would be your NBA prospect.

OK, enough of that...

Think of recent players not only at UB but the entire MAC.

DJ Cooper didn’t sniff the NBA, (I believe he has won a league MVP in Europe or Isreal, don’t care to look it up) Jimmy Hall either. Holmes from BG is the only one who made it in like 2 decades. Not trying to be a downer.

Now the freshman class next year... we will see, but I’m excited.

Current roster, there is something about Graves. Pogo sticks for legs, decent enough size if he improves his handle and FTs. I see a little Isaiah Thomas in him. We will see...

Teams that had Watt as a senior and McCrea as a sophomore, were not as good as this current team and specifically CJ/Harris, regardless of the positions they played. Harris and CJ have more NBA potential than Watt and McCrea had (at any point), and the main point is that they will get noticed more playing on a much better team (hopefully NCAAs). I have no idea how that's uniformed.

From what I hear from people who scout the NBA, Perkins has the most legit chance if he cleans up his Senior year. I don't think he has what it takes personally, but many say he has the size, range, and body type to make it.

Hate hearing complaints about refs. I thought the officiating was fine. The tickytack fouls went both ways. UB just hand checks a little too much and because we don’t switch often on defense, get those blocking fouls on recovery. If it was a one game outlier, maybe you’d have a point, we’re 25 games in and we clearly just foul a bunch.

Not to bring up old wounds, but I will always complain about that tech on Watt for holding onto the rim in Cleveland. That complaint is okay.

Refs discourage teams from running and want them playing more 30 second half court basketball. Its too hard to deny them calling continuation on a drive by BG and then on the SAME exact play, they called it on the floor against BG with no continuation.

It's wildly inconsistent and the refs are really bad in this conference, regardless if its even or not (which a lot of the time it isnt, see Kent game).

I think its fair to complain, i'd say about 2-3 games were swayed.

NIU game was us losing. Kent game was an awful display, this last BG game even the unbiased ESPNU guys (who at times favored BG) even complained about the ticky-tack nickel dimers that were being called in bad places.

Verbal Commits just added another Baltimore MD Power Forward offer for 2019: http://www.verbalcommits.com/players/anthony-walker-iii

Also has offers from Drexel and VCU and was recently contacted by Kansas. It's possible this was the guy Oats went to see per the Gleason article referenced. We have stiff competition for both guys.

I think it was Laquill Hardnett who he visited at the time, not too sure. I'd be happy with either of them, very talented, athletic forwards.

We could be trying to get both, since they're from the same high school. Should be interesting to see where they end up. Both Walker and Hardnett are lengthy, athletic forwards.

It was Hardnett Oats visited. His mom liked a tweet i sent out about it.

Id love both. Our forwards have easily been our weak link

How is it possible to be so agitated, so angry at times, in games the team is winning by double digits? In a season where they've already clinched a tournament bye and wrapped up the division?  Are we spoiled?  Cranky?  No idea what else to do with ourselves in games we assume they'll win?

I think we're all just afraid they'll blow another game like they did at Kent and at NIU.  You can see it possibly happening.  And we're afraid that for all the good play we've seen, all the potential, it could disappear quickly in a game in Cleveland.  That's what is probably in the back of our minds.

Is there a gas leak in the home locker room at halftime lately?  The Bulls habitually build up a double digit halftime lead, then proceed to let it drain away as the other team comes out firing.  I think the defensive intensity is there, but they're allowing too many easy drives to the hoop for my taste as well as some problems dealing with an inside player kicking it back outside.  I liked how Oats put out a lineup with Reese, McRae, Carruthers, and Graves for a minute or two in the second half to change the intensity.

I don't usually say anything about the refs but man, that crew blew their whistles a lot. It seemed like they called a lot of weak fouls early and a lot of off-the-ball fouls on offense, and as the game wore on they lost the ability to call some others by comparison.  Bulls did a good job hitting their foul shots tonight, at least it seemed so.

Perkins - 3 fouls on offense tonight.  Hit a big three down the stretch as well as the one at the end of the half.  Had another big game statistically when you kinda still think he can play better.  I loved how they started working that drive and roll to Perkins in the second half.  I kinda feel like he's very careful on defense these days - will get his position but isn't going nuts, can't afford to get in foul trouble.
Clark - a lot of guys need movement to open up their shots; Wes will just step right up and hit it.
CJ - back to the good old CJ tonight.  When he gets on a roll, the other team doesn't know what hit them.  Hit his shots from the line.
Harris - you almost assume now that his shots are probably going in.  He has this little shimmy move he does with his shoulder when he drives, just a little, that gets the defender momentarily going the wrong way.  He and Clark have the ability to answer with a three at the right times.
Smart - just needs to be tougher underneath.  He's good for a layup or two on a put-back every game.
Graves - showed he could fly on a couple alley-oops
Carruthers - it seems like he just never is out there enough to get into the flow of things.  Even just to be as aggressive as he wants, he probably needs to read a guy's moves enough to do so.  Hit one of those wide-open threes that you say the guy is so open, you have to make this.

Nice crowd tonight, one that continues to reinforce the equation "Friday night game = big crowd".  I wish UB could figure out how to move traffic out of there quicker afterwards, maybe make it two lanes going either way from the lots?  I mean they're constrained by the fact that someone designed all those lots to empty into a two-lane road, while a 4-lane highway sits nearby.

As for BG - you were just slightly ahead of Bona in line when they handed out team colors.  At least make more use of the orange.  Frye - is...is your dad a big donor?  Is your uncle the school president?  Did you get into the team as a legacy like Flounder got into Delta House?  I mean, four air-balls.   And what does that say about the other guards on the bench, that you can't get minutes in a game over a guy who flung up FOUR air-balls?!

What I would pay to see Dakich on that bench again.  Even just a replay of that game - we inquired with MSG to see if they'd gotten the tapes from Empire Sports, but I never heard back any further.

Agreed Enrique.

Jeseph and I talk about this all the time. Are we spoiled? We does a team this good have such bad stretches? Is that normal from a 20-7 (12-2) team. If you told me in preseason that UB would have this record and scoring output and i would have signed in blood. But now i just feel like UB should be 23-4 and a true at-large candidate. Those losses sting more than normal when they can grab you a bid, and even more to lose to the last place team in the conference.

« on: February 16, 2018, 10:11:20 AM »
UB favored by 14 points.

What's at stake?

Randomly, a lot.

UB can clinch the MAC East alone with a win
UB can clinch the 3 seed with a win.
UB can clinch the 2 seed with a win and a Ball State loss.
UB will have beaten every team in the MAC
UB can get to 20 wins for only the 7th time ever

All of this with FOUR games remaining

I hope Harris makes 1st team. He's been the best player in the conference.

I think there should be.

UB has extensive travel for a MAC team anyways.

Bowling Green and Toledo are 20 mins away.

UB already plays 7 of the 11 teams twice (5 east and 2 west) who cares if we don't play Miami twice and play Ball state twice?

It's a good idea to make one division, especially when the WEST/EAST champions don't win anything or get better seeding.

For Football, put the two best team in the championship game, period.

Huge game to rebound from that debacle in Kent.

Need to show they are still in charge and the last 8 minutes was a total fluke (97% chance they should have won)

Oats was just on WGR, and dropped a nice "we don't know what students look like". So that's a good challenge for students to make it out this game.

WMU 70

First, there never was any shot at an at large bid, so nothing was “lost” tonight except the game.

Caruthers is not healthy yet.

Clark is not healthy yet.

CJ is at his best with healthy point guards.

Please stop traveling Jordan!

I hate when we come out the gate shooting hot. I know it sounds crazy, but we stop moving the ball and playing our game.

I voted Kent in the poll I posted.  Toledo took it on the chin at home tonight.  Kent is the team that scares me in Cleveland.

I agree with every point. I'll add:

The referees that we most often see are average to below average.

I'm all for recruiting HS players, but I've had an issue with NOT acquiring a transfer big man. 7 footers out of HS are slow to develop and are a gamble. IMO, Oats should have recognized the superior talent of this years team and gone after an experienced big man (perhaps he did and didn't find one; and yes, I know they don't grow on trees).

I firmly agree witih this, but UB was in until the last minute on Carlton Bragg (5 star transfer from kansas who just chose new mexico state)

The forward play has been bad, and is the reason they could falter, we had better play from many previous teams.

The guard play (which they say wins you conferences though) is as good as UB has ever had.

Perkins has got to be taken to the woodshed...no excuse for only getting 2 rebounds. He is soft.

For sure. He got worked, he plays like a guard and his FG% shows.

McCrea/Smart were so bad tonight too. Nothing you can do with no forwards.

Tonight would have been a good game for True Blue to travel to - first week of classes so I can't imagine much is going on. Pack into the vans and experience how welcoming the locals are at Kan't

Here's hoping the team pulls out the W.

The gold ole' vans.

They totally should have been brought for this one. IMO, the last "big" road game.

ESPN has us as a 12:
http://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/bracketology

As well as statistical comparisons have the MAC as a 1.6 bid conference, mainly due to  UB:

BTW I'm not a coach or player, so I'm not sure I care if it "gets to my head". I'm just enjoying January when no other sports are on.
