Wes Clark appreciation thread
« on: March 18, 2018, 09:46:10 AM »
I know there's a lot of excitement about next year returning *almost* our entire roster (hopefully), but that doesn't diminish the loss of Wes Clark and the amazing half a season he gave us.

The last 3 games are in my mind the best 3 game stretch a UB player has ever had and they were the 3 most important games in UB history.

vs. Toledo: 10/15 FG   2/4 3PT   3 AST   5 REB   4 ST   26 PTS
vs. Arizona: 10/14 FG   3/5 3PT   7 AST   4 REB   1 ST   25 PTS
vs. Kentucky: 9/19 FG   4/10 3PT   6 AST   3 REB   1 BL   26 PTS

It seemed like whenever UB needed a play Wes Clark was there. UB is returning a lot but Wes will be sorely missed. I'm just sad I didn't get to see more of him. One of the best players UB has ever had.

Right on the money BasketBull. He was the catalyst that enabled the CJ's,Perkins and Harris to play their roles. It will be interesting to see who can run the show next year. Will it be a Hamlet or Segu? Jordan hopefully will improve his ball handling and decision making along with his shooting touch. Thanks Wes Clark for giving us more thrills and memories from the first game to the last. Go Bulls!!!!

He picked everyone else up yesterday with his play. It was an extremely impressive display. His ability to score and create for others really elevated this team to another level when he came on in December. He deserves a lot of credit for thebest season in UB history.

I think everyone is under the impression that we’ll be better next season, but the loss of Clark leaves a huge hole to fill. Caruthers’ offense has improved this season and I think he’ll make another leap, plus he’s very vocal and can become this team’s emotional leader. It’ll be interesting to see what we get from Jordan, Graves, Segu and Hamlet next season.

Agree, replacing Wes will be very difficult.  His ability to finish at the rim, his pull up jumper and 3 point shooting are all skills that currently are not available from the other guards on the team.

All the talk seems to be Smart leaving and what about Johnson? I wonder about Reese if he is going to stay with both Hamlet and Segu coming in. It is probably too late to find a quality, athletic big man that we really need. Hope coach Hodgson can work his magic and maybe find a JUCO player or some other hidden gem that has not signed yet. Shoulod be anxious anticipation for next season. Go Bulls!!!!

I think you are absolutely correct. Forget that he only played less than a year. I can’t think of anyone that actually did more for UB Bball. It’s not crazy talk. He should be in UB Hall of fame. He gave us our first NCAA win. Without him, I don’t think it happens.

He is forever a Bull. For sure he’s not going to get welcomed at Missouri, so I hope he is remembered at Buffalo. He should be able to play overseas.

I like Graves to get some of the Clark minutes next year.

I know this is an appreciation thread for Clark and he deserves it, but I think Graves will be a very good player in the MAC.  He impressed me a lot when I saw him on the floor, both on TV and in person.
The State University of New York.

Blue. White. Damn Right.

I can't see Graves as a point guard. He is more of a two guard and Reese is the same way. The whole key is if both Hamlet and Segu can come in and play even remotely like Clark and that might be asking too much. Have not seen much film on Hamlet but seen a lot on Segu and potentially he could turn out to be a key piece along with Jordan who will need to show improvement in all parts of his game. Go Bulls!!!!

One thing I forgot to mention. Even though he didn't play in live action until now, I would believe that he made the team much better by going against him in practice/on scout teams since he got here.

[Right on the money about Wes. That was stated many times during the year that Wes was a part of the team and they formed a bond. You can never underestimate the chemistry that is formed between players and how it translates to the court. It certainately worked. Go Bulls!!!!

I’ve been watching this game long enough to know that the loss of a key player can cause the house of cards to come tumbling down. Next season’s team may look great on paper, but it doesn’t guarantee they will play as a cohesive unit. I understand the hype and expectations for next season are justifiably high. Turning those expectations into reality is what distinguishes the great coaches. They have to recruit more than just raw talent — their players have to fit the system and understand their role. No easy task.

Not sure if this has been mentioned but Wes Clark will be on the MAC team in the Dos Equis 3x3U National championship this weekend. Could be fun to watch.
