Buffalo Bulls Basketball / Re: Wes Clark appreciation thread
« on: April 02, 2018, 01:07:04 PM »
I’ve been watching this game long enough to know that the loss of a key player can cause the house of cards to come tumbling down. Next season’s team may look great on paper, but it doesn’t guarantee they will play as a cohesive unit. I understand the hype and expectations for next season are justifiably high. Turning those expectations into reality is what distinguishes the great coaches. They have to recruit more than just raw talent — their players have to fit the system and understand their role. No easy task.

agreed.  but i'm more worried about the raw talent replacing clark - it was nice to see such a dynamic playmaker at UB.  :D

Interesting discussion in tournament finances

wow, the women are rolling - big margins in both games!  to think they were last 4 in.

Looking ugly now. Good game though - hung tough most of the game with some great athletes.

Down by 6, Buffalo ball. Let's go!

Massinburg's 3 was awesome!

Just as an aside, nothing irritates me more than a UB grad who has passion for like an Ohio State or Syracuse but treats UB as their second team.  What did these schools do for you?  Nothing.  These schools do not care about you.  Why do you give your allegiance to them when you went to a different school.  I just can't understand it.  It annoys me when I see them get excited on facebook but not for Buffalo.  Really annoys me.  Sorry for the rant.

BTW, when we complain about lack of community support, aren't we largely going for this?  we want people who have no real ties to the school and might have gone elsewhere to have a passion for the program, no?  :P

i love me some 'cuse.  they were pretty local, i grew up watching them, and my earliest memories of college sports are of syracuse basketball, from when i was a wee child.  not sure why i wouldn't continue to root for them because i didn't go there.

as for the schools not caring for me, nope, they don't.  neither does ub, in any real sense.

General Discussion / Re: UBfan.com - your feedback is needed
« on: March 16, 2018, 02:43:50 PM »
back in the dark days of reggie, i remember a couple threads that got locked simply because the mods got tired of them and thought that the discussion had gone on long enough.

those were the only threads i recall at that time going beyond a couple pages.  hard to have a community and ongoing discussion when threads get locked because admins simply don't like the thread, not that rules were being broken.

a step down is the chiding and bans, aimed at those who aren't all uber positive about the athletics program at ub. like this: http://www.ubfan.com/board/index.php/topic,5613.msg61558.html#msg61558 why should someone who thinks someone should be fired be banned?  and this might be the only fan forum where it's seen as a personal attack to say a coach sucks, f' him.   maybe a byu forum.  ha.  it's your forum, your rules, but hey, it doesn't help - b!tching about your lousy team is as much a part of sports as cheering for your lousy team.  :D

the forum software itself is also not great.  post something, and get kicked back out to the forum page rather than back where you were in the thread? no notifications on responses to your posts?

modify: these were brought up as rules being broken by fire reggie posters:
Rule 6: We already know how a handful of you feel.  If you constantly make posts about the same subject, you are now entering "Attacking an individual" territory.  This is not tolerated.
Rule 7: If you come to the site and all you post are about why someone should be fired, then you're using this site for a cause against the University and the Athletics Department.  This is not tolerated.
Rule 8: Again, if you continually post the same message, you are now spamming the site.  You are no different than someone who comes here to post messages about some pill or some sketchy site.  You will be kicked off if you continue to spam the site.

saying you wanted reggie fired was seen as an attack on the individual, spam, and using the site against the university and athletics dept.  *sigh*

Buffalo Bulls Basketball / Re: UB Basketball Excellence Fund
« on: March 16, 2018, 02:21:56 PM »
Hello all -

I too will be contributing to the Basketball Excellence Fund to help continue on the success of the basketball programs. I sent an email to someone in athletics to ask for more information on the fund. This is what I received:

"The BEF was created to provide ongoing and recurring support for both the men’s and women’s programs.  It allows people to have a direct impact on the success of the programs – all monies donated go into each of their individual BEF accounts and are restricted dollars.  Which means respectively the coaches have sole discretion on what that money goes towards for their program.  That could range from chartered flights, academic support, new equipment, recruiting, computers, upgrades to the locker room, etc.  Whatever the coaches deem to be the most critical areas of need to enhance their competitive success – both academically and athletically.

i emailed them for a little more detail as well:

Thanks for reaching out. The dollars raised and allocated to the basketball excellence fund are used at the discretion of HC Oats and is used in a variety of ways to enhance the competitive success for the program.

Some of the most common uses are to offset costs to recruit on a national level, schedule to play elite programs throughout the country, basketball specific facility enhancements, and team equipment needs. In addition to that academic resources to help the players balance their academic commitments with a challenging travel schedule while in season.

If you look at the schedule this year and the previous 3-4 years we have been able to schedule some top programs, in order to raise our competitive standard. This has been made possible in large part by our donors.

The fund has grown substantially in the past 4-5 years from generating approximately $20,000 a year to now close to $100,000, mostly because of the number of donors who have jumped on board and committed with 5 year pledges.

All gifts to the Basketball Excellence Fund are 100% tax deductible as they are purely philanthropic commitments. I am sure you have seen/heard about the impact some of the new tax rules are having on college athletics, but that only impacts donors who purchase season tickets and make a donation attached to their seat location.

"schedule to play elite programs throughout the country..." do we pay to play high rank programs (opposite football), or you guys think they're talking travel, etc.  just curious.

i genuinely wonder where Reggie Witherspoon was tonight and if he even watched this game.

Anyone still think we should've kept Reggie? Anyone, anyone?
Come on is this really necessary?
This win is for everyone. Including Bazzani, Cohane, Witherspoon, Hurley and everyone in between. All the past players and coaches and key administrators especially President Greiner. They all played a part. Let’s not ruin the good feeling.

Ok, there's maybe one or two. :-D

the craziest thing is to see all the people online and in the media characterizing this as a monumental "upset" when, to those of us in the know, this hardly even qualifies as surprising

The game was awesome. Super psyched.

But cmon now, we shoot 50% from 3 pt land. Good free throw shooting. stayed out of four trouble. Full 40 min, no dry spells. Outrebounded 7', potential #1 draft pick. It was a bit surprising.  :-D
