News and Announcements / Site Platform Change
« on: July 25, 2018, 09:26:40 AM »

I am planning on changing message board platforms before the football season starts.  First game happens on September 1st.  Which means I will need to launch the new platform around August 17th.

Here is some info:
- The current bulletin board runs on SMF.  I will be changing the platform to Invision.
- We won't be migrating the content.  I will have this site for archive read only.  All new discussions will happen on the new board.
- There is a way for me to migrate the users, but I am actually thinking that I won't.  All users will need to re-register for the new site.

Buffalo Bulls Basketball / Finances for the tourney
« on: March 22, 2018, 09:44:19 PM »
Does anyone know if we actually made money by going to the tourney and this year winning 1 game.  I think we share the revenue with the rest of the MAC, but I would think we also get more of it.

Also on the women.  Do we actually make money with going to the sweet sixteen?  I would think the women actually will bring in revenue this year.  2 big wins in the tourney and going to the sweet sixteen.  Anyone know the numbers?

Buffalo Bulls Basketball / Other games

Wow Virginia just lost.
Not looking past Kentucky but.

We are seeing the fruit of the vision for why UB needs a successful Athletics program.  I can't stress how important this is.

From time to time, you get those officers in Alumni Engagement or Academia (all from UB) on why Athletics is just a waste of money.  No amount of study or research can actually quantify it.  Plus, I really think those that do the study always are biased against it and will use data to prove their point.  I can't remember the name, but there was someone (I think it was the guy in charge of Alumni Association) basically explain to me that all studies point to Athletics being a money loser and how it takes away from Academics.  Needless to say, he would annoy the heck out of me.

Here are things you just can't quantify.

- It brings old friends together.  I have some good friends from my college days.  We get together from time to time.  Try to do yearly camping trip with the families at one of the guys lake house.  Athletics just bonds us so much closer.  It really strengthens our friendship.  Perhaps that's shallow, but it's just a us against them attitude and it just brings us closer together and we just want to hang out more.

- It creates new connections.  You start talking to people and then you discover that you both went to UB.  I just spoke to someone in the hallway and I had no clue he was a UB grad.  Now we just have this connection and I immediately like him.  Strange I know.  I can't explain it.  I can't quantify it.  What can I say?

- Brand Recognition.  There is a colleague of mine that wants his daughter to attend UB but she obviously doesn't.  She's from Westchester.   I live in a pretty wealthy neighborhood in Westchester and the kids usually do not think about tuition.  Or they do not want it to be part of the equation in choosing a school.  I know it's wrong and all, it's just where I live.  Most goto private schools.  I can wear my UB gear and feel proud.  I can even dress my kids in UB gear and they won't feel outcasted.  (I know, shallow, but it is the world we live in).

- How many of us suffered the condescending or the sarcastic tone from our friends?  Let's be honest.  I have endured it.  "You guys play D1"?  Oh you made the tourney?  Congrats (but not a excited congrats, more like a snickering one).  UB, ok, I went to Penn State or Ohio State or fill in any other big school.  Nothing is really said, but somehow them rooting for a big time program is more worthy of their time and energy.  Rooting for a small school is an exercise in futility.

Just as an aside, nothing irritates me more than a UB grad who has passion for like an Ohio State or Syracuse but treats UB as their second team.  What did these schools do for you?  Nothing.  These schools do not care about you.  Why do you give your allegiance to them when you went to a different school.  I just can't understand it.  It annoys me when I see them get excited on facebook but not for Buffalo.  Really annoys me.  Sorry for the rant.

For one night, it just felt so good.  Getting in was one thing.  But actually winning and beating a top team.  I just can't describe what it did to all those years of pain and suffering.

I just want to say, thank you to the administrators, President Trapathi, President Greiner, Danny White, Warde Manuel, Kathy Twist and anyone and everyone who continues to believe in the value of Athletics.

If you also have some stories, please share.  Let's let the administration know how important it is to continue to support our Athletics program.

General Discussion / - your feedback is needed
« on: March 16, 2018, 12:32:05 PM »
To all those that have been here all this time.  Thanks for sticking around.

To those that are just coming back.  Welcome back.

Since I have you all here in one place, I would like to ask for some feedback. was started almost 18 years ago.  It was meant to be a place for fans to gather online.  Technology has changed.  We are not engaging in long dialogues as much anymore.  Statements and arguments are made in 140 characters.  So times have changed.

I would like your feedback on how to make more relevant for the fan community.  We are not here to replace facebook or twitter, but perhaps there's a way for us to still have an online presence where all the fans can congregate.

Please leave your suggestions here.  I'm interested in hearing why you don't visit as much, what can be improved, what needs to do to stay relevant.  The biggest issue for the site is that students are no longer using bulletin boards to communicate anymore.  I think it's a generational thing and they prefer to hit short one liners on facebook and twitter, but we still need a way to get that demographic into the fandom community.

Secondly, I would also like to get some volunteers to help out.  Some possible areas could be:
 - Student liaison
 - Maybe a social person (twitter or facebook liaison)
 - Help with moderating
 - Writing feature articles from time to time.  Game previews, player interviews, game summaries.
 - Help with designing the new look.

Jeseph has already reached out to me about some of these ideas.  So perhaps we can form a group.  The whole goal is to promote UB from a fan perspective.  It's always about promoting UB athletics from a grassroot effort.  I do not want some corporate entity to become the place for where true Buffalo fans gather.

Thanks for reading.

Buffalo Bulls Basketball / Coach Oats was recruiting on television
« on: March 16, 2018, 01:40:47 AM »
Coach said some eye brow raising things on tv today.

It just dawned on me what he is doing.

“We believe we are the better team. We should be up by 10 right now. “
First he is pumping up his guys. Making them believe we belong. The kids played fearless and with so much heart. It was amazing to see.

After the game “we have some high major talent”
I believe he is setting this program up for the future here. He is declaring that Buffalo basketball is no average mid major. We are establishing something here. I also think he is speaking to future recruits. We are not going to settle for 2 star recruits. Are you a high major talent? You need to consider Buffalo.

What a genius. What a salesman. We are so lucky to have him. I really think he will be our brad Stevens. Mark Few.

Buffalo Bulls Basketball / #1 Seed for MAC Tourney
« on: January 22, 2018, 02:11:25 PM »
The incentives aren't as great as it was like 2 years ago to finish top 2, but I think it's still important to finish as the #1 seed.
Gone is the double bye, but top 4 teams still all get 1 bye.
The first game will be against 8/9 which would be considerably easier than going in as a 4 seed against a 5.  (But maybe not, see below).

I had to look this up cause I couldn't remember which teams get byes.
Looks like top 4 teams get 1 bye each.

As of now, Toledo stands at 5-1.  Rest of the pack are at 3-3 so it looks like there is a lot of parity after UB and Toledo.

This guy is such a good marketer. Gotta hand it to him.
Congrats on the national championship.

General Discussion / Bricks for Bulls

Took the plunge and bought a brick.

Now my name will be on campus!  Will take my kids one day and look for the brick.

Buffalo Bulls Basketball / UB at Syracuse 12/19
« on: December 14, 2017, 10:37:45 AM »
Want to start a new thread for this game.

First question.  Is Wes Clark eligible?  Has that been officially announced?  If so, does he start or do you think he comes off the bench?  I'm really pleasantly surprised at how well Caruthers and Jordan are playing.  So it'll be interesting, but you can never have too many quality point guards in today's modern game.

He's averaging over 100 yards a game.  Came out of nowhere and he's picking up national attention.

He's a Junior.  We have him for one more year.  He might be an NFL caliber receiver.  He should return for his senior year right?

General Discussion / Harvey Weinstein
« on: October 11, 2017, 09:37:43 AM »
Horrible what he did.  He might be UB's most famous alum.
Was he a big UB donor or did he do any positives for the university?
I'm also very surprised that this is dominating the news.

Buffalo Bulls Football / UB's three WRs
« on: October 09, 2017, 03:56:19 PM »
What a difference a year makes.
So last year or even going back the last 3 or 4 years, UB has not had any real threat at WR.

Here we sit in week 6 and we just had 3 WRs in one game have over 100 yards.
Drew Anderson is getting lots of credit as he should.  His throws have been money.

But I can't remember a time when we had three WRs look this good.  Yeah, we have the occasional drops, but ...  These guys are athletic.

Anthony Johnson - We've covered him a lot here.  He's good.

Kamathi Holsey - Junior college transfer in his last year of eligibility is starting to put it together.  He's a giant receiver with good hands.  Doesn't seem to have elite speed but man is he big.

KJ Osbourn - Sophomore receiver looks like he's going to be really good.  He's got speed.  He's also starting to show he's got good hands.  Had a breakout game this week.  I hope he build on that.

We also got Anthony Nunn and Jacob Martinez who are decent backups.  This is very close to being the best receiving corp in the last 10 years.

Buffalo Bulls Football / Going from losing to winning
« on: September 11, 2017, 01:55:05 PM »
After 2 games, it's clear that our talent level is there.

We've resolved some big issues
   - Our DBs last year were constantly getting burned for big plays. Slack and Cameron Lewis are playing well.
   - Jackson has improved his accuracy.  He's dropping long balls in.  His short passes look crisp.
   - Improved run defense.  We should be able to stop the run.  One alarming thing is that we weren't able to stop Army on short yardage situations at all, but let's give the D a pass for one week.
   - Playmaker at Wide Receiver.  Who was the last playmaker on this UB squad?  We haven't had one since Alex Nuetz.  It's only 2 games, but let's keep stretching the field with Anthony Johnson.  We found something this week with newcomer Antonio Nunn.  He left his defender in the dust this week so it looks like he has speed.  He was also able to bring that ball in over his shoulder in stride.  Did we find something with Nunn?
Still some issues
   - We're very shaky on 3rd and short passing plays.  Not sure why we're not throwing quick slants to TE and slot receivers.  Have not seen much to the middle of the field.
   - Losing mindset.  When Turner Gill was the coach, I just remember that we had this winning mentality even when we were down.  LL does not project this confidence in his team.  Hopefully a win against Colgate brings on a new culture.
   - Kicking game.  I was sitting at the endzone so I got a close look at Mitcheson's kicks.  On both extra points, the kicks were very close to hitting the left upright.  He needs to improve or we are going to give away 2 or 3 close games.  Just saw that in 2016, he was one of the 10 worst kickers in D1.
   - Explosive run plays.  We're not doing terrible here with 3 or 4 yard gainers, but we just have not seen a threat of a HR from our RBs.  Hawkins does not have that much experience yet, so hoping the explosive play will come with him getting more touches.
   - Deception Screen plays to offset blitz.  Is it me or are we just not running these anymore.  Ok, so Naaman and Stakrs are not on this roster, but we used to hit paydirt consistently each week with these plays.  Where are they?
   - Bad penalties.  What was up with those penalties this week?  Late hit penalties are just inexcusable.
We're close.  I can feel us doing something.  It's the little things.  Let's get the little things taken care of and this team can be special.

This is awesome.

Great to see players grow into the next stage and develop a business.
All the best to them.
