General Discussion / Re: Branding Survey
« on: September 23, 2015, 11:35:48 AM »
I cannot fathom how people can say, or downplay I guess is a better word, how using the name "New York" isn't a key component of NYBI.  No, I agree, there's more to the initiative, but using New York figures in pretty damn highly in the whole thing, if not the most.

Name is everything, its who you are.  How would people be upset by a name?  Because its a pretty important part of who you are.  What is somebody went to Michigan and told them "hey guys, you are now the Michigan State Wolverines" and somebody went to Michigan State and told them "Hey, you guys are Michigan Spartans now"  I know thats an extreme example, but its ridiculous to say, "well its only a name, it doesnt matter"

If UB goes through this whole Branding study, however many parts there are too it.  Judging by the initial results, and for once trusting the info Brooklyn pointed out as to the purpose of the study, and taking what I think rma was eluding to in his comment, its likely that the University may tell White, "you know what, your "New York" stuff doesnt quite fit into what we're doing here", you just can't play off what affect that will have on his overall scheme.

We can't be the premier athletics school for the state of New York without calling ourselves New York. Nobody east of Rochester would ever consider a school that called itself the University at Buffalo a school that somehow represented the rest of NY. Now, we could attempt to go the Louisville/Boise route and try to build a fanbase entirely out of the city of Buffalo, however those schools don't have rabid professional sports fanbases to compete with. It's a stupid debate. I think Danny has the right idea, he just can't get around SUNY to implement it properly.

We know this......

but, rma's comments in this thread, is what we're commenting about.  And Tim was the one who said NYBI has nothing to do with branding.......

Except tim never said that... but thanks for playing.

What tim said was "While many, including me, would love to see New York State in our AD's name that's not what NYBi is about"..

A brand is *MORE* than the name!

Except in this thread we are talking brand, as in name....and what the University is trying to call itself as a whole moving forward with this Branding Survey.

I think NYBI was brout up by rma who said "Seems like NYBI wouldn't work well with this then. "

I simply said NYBI was about the entire AD brand, not just a name.

That people don't get that is not my fault.

Then if it's not about the name, like I said, he should be capable of working with UB, or University at Buffalo, or Buffalo.

If it wasn't about the name it wouldn't be NYBI, NEW YORK Bulls Initiative.  It wouldn't be about rolling out a logo that says:
Something something something NEW YORK something as the face of it.

The name figures in pretty highly when it comes to a Brand.  It's the same thing when people get tweaked and shake their heads when during Televised games, UB gets referred to as the Bills.  If names don't matter, people wouldn't care.

And by the way, when I filled out my Survey, I made sure to tell them in my responses to take a cue from White's initiative and push it even further to renaming UB as U of NY or New York State University and allow UB to become what it should be anyway in the State of New York.  And when the second part of the survey (according to the email I received) I will continue to tell them that.

The purpose of the survey is that when it is completed all and I mean all portions of the university shall be called the same thing.  The individual parts will not be able to come up with their own names.  Currently the law school calls itself SUNY Buffalo Law School.  Once the branding process is complete all parts of school will be called the same thing whether an individual part like the name or not.  The administration wants the one name and it will forced upon everybody/

It is all "The State University of New York at Buffalo", right?  Whether it's SUNY Buffalo, UB, University at Buffalo, etc.   Is there really confusion or is this solving a problem that doesn't really exist, just to create uniformity?

If there was an easy, simple, obvious solution, it would have been made already.   How do you incorporate the history and location of "Buffalo", while tapping into the untapped aspect of using "New York" for athletics branding.

Can't it just be this and we call it a day?

Official Name:  State University of New York at Buffalo

d/b/a:   SUNY Buffalo

Nickname:   UB

Athletics (d/b/a):  New York Bulls

I think because nobody cares what a SUNY is.  Its not like SUNY or State University of New York is commonly used in everyday speak.  In all reality, being a part of SUNY means very little to people because its way over used in every public institution of higher learning in New York State.  And going by the initial responses from this survey, it seems people connected with the University are still happy being UB or University at Buffalo.  I think the purpose of the Survey, and from Brooklyn's response, is that the whole school, athletics included, are ALL going to present one uniform face to the public.

Seems like NYBI wouldn't work well with this then.

What does one have to do with the other?
If they want all parts of the school to bear the same brand, it seems unlikely that all parts of the school would switch to NY, even without an official name change.

While many, including me, would love to see New York State in our AD's name that's not what NYBi is about.

Hmmm......So then its reasonable to say that White would be capable of...

"Building America's Next Big-Time College Athletics Brand"

by being UB, or Buffalo, or University at Buffalo then.....

By the way I was going to try to set this up a poll.  But with 27 combinations it was too many options to make the poll manageable.

27, wow, really???

Oh cripes, theyre becoming Oregon & Maryland, just shoot me now.....

I'd like for the home crowd to see the new white lids.  Would look good with the Blue jerseys and white pants.

What did the players think about them???

Doesn't seem to be much buy in to NYBI amongst the University Community.
Doesn't seem to be much buy in to UB Athletics amongst the University Community either.

Yea, but thats nothing new.  Students are still apathetic, Alumni still dont show much support, Academics, for the most part will continue to not get involved, and then include a weak community support, and thats what we have.  Basically, same shaq, different day.....

Buffalo Bulls Football / Re: UB Bulls vs Penn State pregame thread
« on: September 09, 2015, 03:30:36 PM »
I'm pretty confident that this Licata-led Buffalo offense can put up points on just about anyone (they put up 30+ in 7 of 11 games last year).  I'm mostly concerned with the Bulls' defense.  Can they generate enough pass rush?  Can they get some stops on third downs?  Can they keep up with the other team's speed?  I fully expect that Penn State is going to be angrily motivated enough after their performance last week that they're going to be better.  So while I feel a little more confident today about this game than I did a week ago, I think Penn State, at home, will play much better this week.

Evidently the players, well the Captains, buried the Temple Game Film yesterday, so they know their performance against Temple wasnt good enough...

However, the coaches, Franklin basically said yesterday in his press conference, and if you read between the lines of coach speak, the offensive coaches are on notice.  Which you would assume anyway after that embarrassment.  But theyve shown for game in game out going back to last season, a stubbornness not to change, so who knows.

Like you I wish UB's defense wasnt such a question mark.  They did alright vs. Albany, but that was Albany.

Buffalo Bulls Football / Re: Two Minutes Hate - Pen15 State
« on: September 09, 2015, 03:23:10 PM »
Wait a minute, maybe I'm lost - I thought this was the discussion about why we DON'T like Penn State.  It's even in the title of the thread.  So you'd think that by the very nature of it, if you're a Penn State fan, you'd avoid this.

It wasn't one guy.  It took one guy to do it, and a whole pyramid of people around and above that to look the other way and pretend everything was fine.  Sometimes doing the right thing is the difficult choice, and a range of Penn State people decided that keeping their image and their cash-producing major football program was more important.  It took a list of coaches and administrators, and a fanbase as well, to tut-tut about how righteous they were and point the finger down at everyone else all the while.  And for how many to act afterwards as if none of this should have any effect on that image or the program.  YOU ARE PENN STATE

Whatever dude, obviously you know the whole story.....hoorah for you!!!!!!!!!

Edit:  Come to think of it, my response was a bit harsh.... Your right, this thread is to hate on Penn State. The difference is I expected something to be said about IT, and Hokie, god bless him, did a remarkable job working it it.  I expected alot worse to tell you the truth.  But when I see a response like yours, well it tweeks a nerve in me because we had enough of that "narrative" from the likes of Stuart Scott and the other yahoo's at ESPN, and the other talking heads in the 24/7 News Cycle that would rather report fiction than fact to grab the most ratings, back in November 2011 up until the next stupid ass story came along and distracted everybody.

You are right, I dont want to drag this thread down with argument over IT.  If you want to know more about it, and why we are tweeked by the "narrative", personal message me and I can do it there.  Fair enough??

I hate Penn State because of the smug self-righteous pedestal they put themselves on for so long.  Their president pushing for the strictest sanctions for the smallest infractions everywhere else.  Their AD selling it as the one place that was never busted for anything.  And then the curtains were drawn, and the truth came out.  And they were shown to be as corrupted by big-time college sports as any other, but they'd put everyone else down as if they weren't.  Perhaps, therefore, more corrupted than any other.  So when all that mess went down I thought, "look at all of this - YOU ARE PENN STATE."  Their fanbase is almost as delusional as the Patriots'.

Thank you Temple for last week's show.

Amazing that no where did you put in the name Sandusky, considering it was him acting on his own, created all this.

As far as Penn States roll in it, well that still hasnt been worked out yet.....

And thats all Ill say about that.....
