All that last night proved is that Lovie Smith's philosophy is correct.  He said that he does not have a problem with a QB throwing into coverage.  If a DB could catch a ball on a regular basis they would be WRs.  Second proof, Bosie Ross.

Yea, and as a Bears fan who watched every year of Lovie as our head coach where did that philosophy get us? It got us to one Super Bowl, where ironically enough, was lost in part due to throwing the ball in coverage and returned for 6. The reason we were good under Lovie had way more to do with Ron Riveras defense and Dave Toubs special teams, than this philosophy you're referring to. Lovie was fired a few years later, and now is not doing so hot in Tampa.

Lovies philosophy is not one I wish any team go by if they want a chance to win a championship

No reason for us not to get at least 6 wins this season, and at least a chance at a bowl.

Super ugly game, but a win is a win. It's very unfortunate watching Joe this season, I keep waiting for it to "click" for him, but it's just not. He could have easily thrown 3 more picks yesterday. I don't really care for excuses like the playcalling, or offensive scheme. Just watching the games, I don't get where or why he is making these throws. I don't think the scheme is telling him to throw it in to double and triple coverage.

Jordan Johnson has been great this year, love watching him run.

We got bailed out twice on roughing calls during kicks. Our special teams coverage is still not good.

I am happy we are sitting at 4-4, but damn that was ugly!

Huge win for the team, it was very close to a "must-win" if we want to make some noise and push for a bowl game later on. Very good performance from the defense once again.

Consistent winning will be the only thing to get a lot of butts in the seats on a regular basis. Blacking out games in the dorms won't do anything, all the pregame festivities in the world, although it generates some buzz, doesn't persuay people to stay for more than a quarter or two.

For the very small percentage of kids that might watch the games from their dorm, blacking it out won't get them to the game. It will just require them to be more "creative," when watching the game online. It's not hard for anyone to find a stream of any game online, and no i'm not talking ESPN3.

Lance looks in over his head thus far. It's still year one, but, yikes.

I hate to say it, but I agree. It's way too early and he'll obviously need much more time but a couple of things are certain at this point - this team plays extremely undisciplined football. That, to me, is on the coach. Penalties, broken plays, dropped passes, turnovers... every single game has been plagued in one way or another with one of these problems. The talent is there in our players but the coaching has been disappointing considering the expectations. I have confidence in him though. From everything I've ever heard LL is going to work harder than anyone to get this ship righted.

I think we should start looking at getting some playing time for the younger QBs. They need to get their feet wet against MAC competition.

Agreed with most of this up to this point. It's worth noting however that being a college coach is a 2 part deal, and he is killing it so far in recruiting. It's on paper of course, but the class coming in next year looks to be very strong. It's hard not to give LL the benefit of the doubt with his track record, I will stay patient and hope that we can turn things around

I mentioned this in the Bull Run chat, but why not give Daniel a couple drives? I'm sure they can come up with a gameplan for a drive or two, using his mobility as a massive change of pace compared to Joe. Joe is not getting it done right now, I see no reason to not give our other Senior QB an opportunity to make plays. Maybe he will provide a spark that we've been looking for. I assume Lance won't do it because of the people who would be upset to see the WNY hero benched his senior year. He's kind of stuck in that regard.

I was actually writing something very similar to this earlier but decided to delete it in fear that the Buffalonian Licata Brigade would chew me out for it.

I'm not sure who you think is the "Buffalonian Licata Bridgade"???

I dont think it has anything to do with him being from Buffalo.

Most of the pushback in support is because of stats and numbers, not where he's from....

They know who they are.

Licata has always had a little bit of an "edge" (for lack of a better term), because he is the local kid who broke all the WNY passing records in HS. He got off to a really hot start with UB, and that hyped him up even more. He was the "savior." He has put up good stats up to this point as well. In his particular situation, it would be tough for Lance to bench him in his first year as the coach, but it honestly could be the best thing for the team. Joe isn't performing, and i'm not saying bench him completely, but give Daniel a shot to spark some offense.

Yea, I get all that, and I read the game thread so I know what you and Mr. Brand were dealing with.

But I honestly dont think the support for has anything to do with Buffalo vs.non Buffalo reasons.  The pushback you two got was based primarily on pretty stats and numbers (which I think are bull shaq and dont paint the whole picture accurately anyway and shouldnt be relied on).

Im just guarding against this turning into another Buffalo vs. non-Buffalo situation when it really isnt.

Agreed with all of that.

I don't know if this has been posted yet, but this is a great article on Tony. I had the pleasure of getting to know Tony well and I can honestly say he is one of the nicest people I have ever met.

Yea, I saw it. Talk about a great student athlete, he has been a great representative of UB Football. I hope he gets a shot to play a bit this year.

4.  I assume our LBs just take the wrong gaps or our D-line is doing nothing up the middle, because we really have an obvious weakness right up the middle.  And, if we overcompensate, any reasonable QB can just pull it down and take it outside (like their QB did on the TD run).  I would expect more and more teams to just try to run up the middle against us.

Our Linebackers were not the problem in any way in this game. This is all due to the offense that Bowling Green runs. They spread you out with quick passes immediately to receivers that are pressed way out near the sidelines and cause the linebackers to start pushing out in support so the corners aren't standing on an island, then once the LBs are pressed out enough they just run it hard straight between the tackles. When they run the ball all they need to do is get through the DLinemen and they have wide open field. It's incredibly hard to defend and our linebackers did an excellent job with it until they simply ran out of gas in the second half from running like dogs.

If our stupid offense could complete a damn drive then we would have won this game. Who cares how many yards they put up? Those don't count for anything and Bowling Green has one of the youngest secondaries in the country. So frustrating.

Agreed with clodney here.

If I was told before the game that we were going to hold BG to 28 points (lowest of the season thus far), I would have not believed it. Our defense did enough to win this game, but our offense is not finishing enough drives.

4 games in to his senior season and Licata has still shown me nothing but regression. His stats today? Not bad, and that's what pro-Joe people point to when they argue for. Stats don't mean anything when he is making terrible throws at the worst of times. I know he can't be 100% blamed, but there were many that put him on a pedestal before the season started and he needs to be called out on his underwhelming performance thus far. With any offense this team is 3-1 and maybe even 4-0.

Is it him or the play calling? They made those low-success long throws when a shorter throw would get you a first and keep a drive moving. Or running when you need 25 yards? Not getting that.

Certainly there is blame to go around. All I know is there are times when watching Licata that you wouldn't think he's a 5th year senior. Some decisions and throws he makes are things I would expect of a freshman, not Joe. Especially with all the recognition that he receives from both inside and outside the Bulls family. He has to be better than this.

He is not.  He is a first year graduate student.  He graduated in four years.

Cool. Point still stands

This is going to be tough. We have to play Bowling Green at home who just beat up on 2 Big Ten teams, go to CMU who has looked decent against some great competition, then play an Ohio team that should have beaten Minnesota in Minneapolis. We need to win at least 1 of these games or a bowl game is likely out of reach.

This is Lance's chance to shine. All of our recent success in football has come against the worst teams in the MAC. I think Quinn had only 1 win over a MAC team with a winning record, and it was a 1-pt victory over Ohio in a year that we went 3-9. These next 3 opponents are all good teams that I think will end up above or near 0.500 at year end (except maybe CMU), so any victories here would be impressive in Leipold's first year.

Personally, I think this team is a few bad throws and a few terrible penalties away from being 4-0. I think our secondary will challenge Bowling Green but we'll lose a tight, high scoring affair. We'll then go on the road to CMU and upset the Chips who has struggled running the ball all year. Then it will come down to a big game against Ohio, which I think we ultimately lose considering how their defense shut us down last year with all of the same guys returning. If we can manage at least 1 win in these next 3 then we'll be in a great spot with 4 of our last 5 games being extremely winnable. Then again, this is the MAC so who the hell knows what's going to happen.

Winning a tight, high scoring affair would mean that our offense can put points on the board. I'm not so sure our offense will be able to score more than 24 points, unless somethings changes. We need Joe to to play better, and we need to be smarter with stupid penalties and maybe it's possible. I do expect us to win at least 1 of these games, but I couldn't tell you which one it might be.
